Oh my gosh - you have to read this book! Just looking at the cover, I probably wouldn't have borrowed it. But someone recommended it and it is so cute and funny.
This princess's father steps down from his throne to pursue his dream of carpentry and he and his daughter are living life as peasants and trying to put food on the table. One day, the princess finds out that a prince (in a different kingdom - not like her brother or something ;)) is looking for a wife and that the prince's mother is essentially holding a contest among applicants (many of whom you will recognize). She gives them all sorts of tests and challenges and this princess is very humorously sarcastic and no-nonsense. In the end, she has to cook a feast but gets last dibs on the ingredients available and has to settle for some flour, ripe tomatoes and stale cheese. She has no idea what/how to cook but she accidentally makes a pizza! The first, apparently. She wins the contest but then tells them she's no longer interested in marrying the prince and goes home to open up a pizza shop. So cute and comical. :)

I first saw this pizza idea in Family Fun, but then ended up having a different (easier) version at my sister in law's house last week and decided to recreate hers. I made my own crusts and then did marinara sauce like normal. Cooked and chopped some bacon and sprinkled over the crust. Topped with mozzarella and baked like normal. Then sprinkled shredded lettuce and diced toms on top and spooned some light mayo in a sandwich baggie and piped it over the top. It tasted sooooo good!
The Hawaiian was just normal diced ham and pineapple.
Then I cut up some felt pieces for the kids to create their own "homemade" pizzas.
I gave it to them like this.
Will was totally into it and did it over and over again.
Sophie didn't want to at first, but then saw Will having fun and decided to jump in.
I helped her count pieces as she placed them just like Will was doing.
Will's counting turned into a math game. I asked him "Are there more pepperonis or mushrooms on your pizza?" and "You have five green peppers on your pizza. Are there the same number of green peppers as pepperonis or as mushrooms?" He really liked this and did very well. He also counted up to 26 I think (with perfect 1:1) as he placed each piece of cheese.
