Round Two of the Blue

Friday evening. Straight from work.

One hour. Two quarts.

Solitude. Peace and quiet.

Leaves heavy with rain drops from an earlier rain.

Totally soaked me during picking because I was constantly squatting and ducking under and into the wet bushes.

Great leg workout with all the squatting. ;)

Figured out that U-Pick prices are almost half those of ready-picked for blueberries.

Leaves are like a canopy to all the ripe fruit hiding beneath. Love this pic with the sunlight shining through.

Can see a bunch of green buds just waiting to ripen in this heat and rain.

Happiness.

Hello, goat. :)

Steve (farm owner) insisted I try a little, yellow plum after I asked if they tasted different than purple ones. He pulled and washed one for me right there in the store. Delicious. Took home a pint container of these babies too. About eight small plums.

{Sorry for the blur. Took the small cam tonight.}

Only about a week left of blueberries. Definitely want to go back!

I Have New Credentials!!

I just got my test results back this week from my CLC training program... and I passed!
So I am officially a Certified Lactation Counselor now!

I have been meaning to write a post about many of the interesting things I learned in the training program and just haven't had the time. But it's all so fascinating and I want to share with you! So I will get around to it soon! August is National Breastfeeding Month so maybe I'll get that post written next week. :)

I've been talking with the Lactation Consultants that head up our program at work about some exciting new opportunities I might have to continue my education and training in the breastfeeding field. My boss is on board with me furthering this area of expertise for our clinic and being the unofficial representative for our breastfeeding mothers. We do have another counselor that works in our office two days a week. But the more of us that are trained, the better we will be at assisting our mamas! My main practice will still be as a dietitian and my job is not changing. (Even before taking this course, I have been counseling breastfeeding mothers in my day to day work.) But now I will be able to physically assist a mother with latching her baby when necessary and I will be the go-to person for general breastfeeding questions most days. I'm excited!

Fun With Friends

Our weekend strolled by at a much more relaxed pace in comparison to many of the previous summer weekends. Not too much on the agenda - just a couple social commitments with friends, some blueberry picking with my girl, a little cleaning, a little chilling out and a little reading.

I baked some blueberry bars on Saturday during nap time to take with us to dinner at a friends house that evening. Our friends Tim & Angie and their adorable daughter Addyson invited us over for a delicious meal and we had so much fun!

When we arrived, Addyson had her little pool ready along with some water balloons for playing. But very shortly, a big storm blew in and we never even got to put our swimsuits on. So instead, we hung out in Addyson's super cute play room. She is the one that set up this little photo session, by the way, and I love that she poses! :)
Addyson was born in March of 2008, so she and Will are about nine months apart.

They were either jumping or dancing... can't remember. :)

Another view of the play room.

Genius! Pull up a chair to the stove while cooking... Why didn't I think of that?

Addyson rocking her baby that I just swaddled for her.

Will played with the Melissa & Doug ice cream set for most of the evening.

Check out Addyson's room! So pretty. I helped the kids "play library" with Addyson's books. We requested pretend library cards, scanned bar codes and said "beep!" and then took turns playing librarian.

Downstairs, while Craig and Tim discussed some remodeling plans in Tim's kitchen, Addyson & Sophie pretended to cuddle up for bedtime. Addyson has lots of super soft blankets!

I love Sophie's eyes in this picture. :)

Thank you, Mann family, for having us!

On Sunday morning, we tried some new blueberry pancakes, I put away a bunch of clean laundry (a never ending process), and Will asked if he could help me clean a little. Umm... yes, please! He dusted and vacuumed several parts of the first floor. Unfortunately, the vacuum was lifted up in the front most of the time that he was pushing it, so I ended up having to go over most of it later, but I still appreciated his efforts. I need to involve my kids in daily house chores more often.

Will asked to take "just one picture, please!" using my camera. He's getting better at centering his subject. This is what he took:

Sunday morning after nap, we met up with more friends to give some little people a tour of the Riedeman farm. My sister's co-worker, Kelly, has a little boy just a few months younger than Will who is infatuated with tractors/heavy machinery and farm stuff right now. I've gotten to know Kelly's adorable fam through blogging and a few meet-ups and we thought it would be fun to let the kids check out the farm, see some animals and take a tractor ride with Craig.

The kids were all playing on this trailer like it was their stage or something and Casey asked if we could get a group pic with their legs dangling and smiling... All three of us moms kind of laughed like "ya, right!", but we did get a few decent ones.

Love this one of Stella & Soph.

Will & Brody... future farmers?

Will is so used to being surrounded by girls that "Ring Around the Rosy" is just as common place as, say, smashing cars or playing with bugs.

"We all fall down!"

Jumping, marching and dancing.

Awesome, Sophie... Touch a lot of dirty things and then put your fingers in your mouth. ;) She looks like she's whistling. :)

Feeding Maggie the cow some tall grass.

Craig took the kids right inside the little feeding area to take a peek at the baby calf.

Will feeding Hazel.

It was so cute to see how excited Brody got with each new piece of farm equipment. Combines are enormous and intimidating to a little kid and he climbed right up!

Massey-Fergusons are what Will claimed were his favorite kind of tractor when we were chatting with our CSA farmers back in May at orientation.

Brody's first tractor ride with Craig. My kids were calling him "Farmer Brody" and waving as he drove past. Craig let him take the wheel a lot of the time and told me, of all the kids, Brody definitely had the best control with steering.

Craig gave rides to each one of the kids. He's been driving tractors since he was eight years old and will eventually take over farming his dads land when his dad can't do it any more... if that ever happens. ;) Tom Riedeman just turned 67 and is probably in better shape than most people my age. :) I think the Wii Fit game told him he had a "fitness age" (or whatever they call your current level of fitness) of like 20-something! The Riedeman men tend to live very long lives. Farming will do that for you! Tom's parents lived to their 90's and Grandma Riedeman (Cecilia, or "Sis") could squat in her garden for hours and her tiny frame could practically lift Grandpa when his health declined and wasn't getting around as well. I told Craig if he stops eating garbage and lets me feed him right, I'll make sure he lives to 100. ;)

Probably my favorite picture of the day. ;)

While we were swinging, "Farmer Brody" drove by on another ride and we all waved to him.

Well... maybe this is my favorite...

Love these guys...

Back home, we played with sidewalk chalk...

...and water balloons!

What a fun, chill weekend.
