Okay, people, enough of my putzing around...
Spring (or, rather, the season formerly known as spring... what is this season we've got going on right now?) is quickly passing and, besides my photo albums, I haven't started anything on my to-do list! {I've made some great progress in the photo/video organization department, though! Yay!}
The "SC&O" in the title of this post stands for Spring Cleaning & Organizing. :) Hoooopefully, you'll be seeing a bunch of these posts coming up if I can get my cleaning hat to stay on for awhile. I go in spurts of feeling uber motivated as well as frequent waves of wanting to purge every storage space in my house.
Last week, on a whim, I just decided to give myself half an hour to attack my make up drawer. I'd had a smallish cardboard box sitting on my bathroom floor for weeks, ready to collect the several years old eye shadows and lipsticks that I never use. Craig kept asking me "What's that box for again?" And I kept answering "I'm gonna' clean!"
I didn't think to take a "before" picture of the drawer, but trust me, it wasn't pretty. Random hair claws and rubber bands everywhere. Hair and dust all along the bottom and in the corners. And a bag of make up that has collected in my many fazes of "Okay, I'm really going to start making a better effort now..." Umm... nope. It just doesn't happen. I never wear eye make up, except for mascara. And if I do, I don't like the way it looks. So really... why keep it? And I prefer tinted chapstick (like Burt's Bees) instead of lipstick. So I just pulled everything out and purged most of it. This is a "during" picture:
I wiped down the inside of the drawer and then even wiped out the inside of my little travel make up bag where I keep my staple items. It's down to the bare essentials now: liquid foundation & concealer (I've used this for years - just a thin coverage to even out my blotchy skin tone), powder (on rare occasions), blush, mascara (not every day), eye liner (SUPER rare). I also cleaned my make up brushes.
Now my drawer is so clean and organized! Make up bag in front. Hair things stacked nicely. Then those little bags/pouches in the back contain: set of Victoria's Secret make up brushes, a few extra make up things that I may use sometime, a couple bags of head bands and rubber bands, a baggy of a million (literally, a million) bobby pins that I will probably never use (collected from high school dances and weddings). And that little bag of white, mascara wands on the far right were leftover from a Body Shop party and I like to use clean ones to separate lashes after applying mascara sometimes.And I did take a (scary) before picture here:
Pulled everything out again and wiped out the cabinet. Seriously... I haven't done this since we've been married. The box on the floor (on the left) is a bigger one that I brought up to purge this cabinet and a little of the tall cabinet to the left of the sinks. I'm getting rid of a LOT of goopy nail polishes, an old travel make up bag, old lotions, some Cetaphil that never worked for me, and lots of jewelry (the cute but cheap costume stuff, not nice stuff) that I never wear anymore. That hot pink thing with black stripes on the floor in front of the cabinet is a jewelry roll that I used to save only the pieces that I couldn't part with. All my necklaces hang from a shelf in my closet and I pretty much wear the same few things every day: wedding/engagement band, necklace from Christmas, little drop earrings (they only come out to get cleaned), and one plain ring on my right hand.
I came across my wedding day earrings, which I (of course) saved.
I stuck some favorite bracelets in this little, hard, leather container.
This tiny jewelry case now holds a bunch of pieces that are saved exclusively for sentimental value, i.e a locket from when I was a baby and another locket that Craig gave me for my high school graduation.
I took all those little baggies of random buttons that were stuffed into a shoe box with the costume jewelry and added them to my collection on our Tot School shelves.
Now look!! So much more tidy and easy on the eye!
It's amazing how much better you can feel after such a simple project. Seriously... amazing. It somehow takes a weight off the brain. You know?
