We read some cute Mother's Day books last week that I wanted to share.
This one was probably the favorite: The Mother's Day Sandwich by Jillian Wynot.
Big sister and little brother want to make breakfast in bed for their mom on Mother's Day but can't decide what to make, knowing that they're not allowed to use the oven, stove or knives. They finally settle on cereal and a banana and walk in to surprise mom. Instead, they scare her out of her sleeping state... arms go flailing along with the breakfast tray... and little tears start to fall. Mom realizes what has happened and tells them she'd really like a sandwich for Mother's Day. The kids offer to make her one and she tells them everything they need is in this room. Each of the kids is a slice of bread and mom is the cheese. They hug tight and the pieces of bread tell the cheese they love her. "'I love you too,' said the cheese." :) Will LOVED this book and laughed out loud each time we read it. Then he insisted on giving me a Mother's Day Sandwich on Sunday.
T. Rex and the Mother's Day Hug by Lois G Grambling
When I saw this title, I thought it'd be perfect for Will! Especially because the story includes some other favorite dino species (Diplodocus and Iguanodon) as T. Rex's friends. Mama Rex tells T. Rex from the beginning that all she wants is a Mother's Day hug. But T. Rex wants to do MORE! He has the best intentions but seems to make a big mess with all his ideas. In the end, Mama gets her hug and tells him that's all she ever wanted.Mars Needs Moms by Berkeley Breathed (Is that really the author's name??)
I confess I never actually read this with Will. Craig did. He said the story is cute but the illustrations are a little creepy. I'd heard good reviews on this book from a couple sources and wanted to check it out. Apparently the main character in the story can't figure out what the big deal is about moms. All they do is make you eat vegetables and take out the trash, etc. But then, while the little boy sleeps, his mom is abducted by aliens from Mars and he sneaks after them to find out where/why they're taking her. It turns out Mars needs these mom-creatures to chauffeur their little ones to practice, play dates and pizza parties, etc. (among other mom duties). And the little boy learns to appreciate all that his mom does for him after seeing what the Martians have done without. I barely glanced through the book before returning it and the illustrations are very detailed, kind of humorous and, yes, a little creepy. But the book won awards, I think.I've also had My Mom Has X-Ray Vision on hold for awhile and now Mother's Day has come and passed and I'm still waiting. That's supposed to be a funny one, too.
Here are a couple that we own that make me think of Mother's Day.
Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastman
I love this one. It's so cute and funny. The baby bird hatches from it's egg while the mother is away fetching food for her soon-to-be-arriving, new hatchling. The baby leaves the nest in search of his mother but has no idea what his mother should look like. So he greets lots of animals and objects, asking if they are his mother, until finally he is placed back in his own nest in time to meet his real mother. Very sweet. Is Your Mama a Llama? by Deborah Guarino
This board book was a birthday gift to Sophie this year because Will and I borrowed it in the past and LOVED it. Lloyd the llama asks all of his friends if their mamas are llamas too. They each respond that they don't think so and give examples of their mothers' unique traits and characteristics that don't match that of a llama. It's very rhymey and Sophie loves that all the little llamas are snuggled up with their mamas at the end of the book.
