Mud Pie Kitchen

Mud Pie Kitchens are all over the blogosphere lately and I've been wanting to give it a try. One family even attended a birthday party for a friend that themed around a giant mud pit. All the kids wore swim suits and sloshed around in the wet mud! (Think: a grease pig contest without the pig.) Can you imagine how seriously fun that would be for a kid? That is IF they're not afraid of getting dirty. My kids are far too prissy for that. I think it would be so fun, though.

So anyway, these mud pie kitchens are set up in any way you want to imagine and some people get really creative with them. I figured one of the quickest, easiest ways to start ours was in the sand/water table. I changed clothes after work one evening last week, shoveled a table's worth of dirt out of the edge of the unplanted field on the north side of our yard (I'm going to put it back) into a wheel barrow, dumped it into the table and hosed it down with water. Then I brought out a bunch of plastic spoons, spatulas, small bowls and even my small saucepan with lid for the kids to create with!

The kids wore dark shorts and that's it. Sophie played for a short while and whined about her hands getting dirty, but Will really enjoyed it! He made me chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal pancakes and a "big cake".

This was our "oven". He set the pan on the step and pushed some imaginary buttons on the side to set the time and temperature.

More cheap thrills. ;)
