What We've Read

These are from several weeks ago. I signed Will up for the summer reading program when we selected these books but then haven't been very good about keeping track of our reading times... so we're giving that up. I just forget to check the clock before we sit down to read and then I have no idea how much time passes. Also, Will needs zero incentive to interest him in reading. Whenever I tell him I brought home a new book to read (sometimes I pick up books on hold for me on the way home from work) it's like telling him we're having ice cream for dinner. He seriously squeals with excitement. :)

Sophie had several favorites out of this bunch too. There were a bunch of Paul Bright and Jez Alborough books this time, but she mostly preferred the ones about Josie, Louella Mae and Summer. (See below.)

Me and My Dad! by Alison Ritchie

Another cute daddy book that we requested for Father's Day and didn't become available until really late. Little Bear and his dad love being together - a fun-loving and affectionate pair. Very sweet.

I'm Not Going Out There! by Paul Bright

A little boy hides under his bed, afraid to come out. Can you guess why? It's not because of monsters... they're afraid too! It's his angry sister after she discovered someone put a spider in her shoe!

Wilfred to the Rescue by Alan MacDonald

After a large rainfall, the stream at Brambly Hedge where the mouse families live, bursts its banks and floods the area. Families pull together to help one another and Wilfred saves the day when he rescues his sister who went off exploring on her own.

Charlie's Superhero Underpants by Paul Bright

I really thought this one would be a bigger hit than it was. A gusty wind blows Charlie's Superhero Underpants off the clothes line and he embarks on a distant adventure to find them. Will really wasn't interested.

Where Did Josie Go? by Helen E. Buckley

Adorable. Rhymey. Both kids loved spotting little Josie hiding on each page. Sophie named the older brother "Will". Might put this one on the Amazon wish list.

Tall by Jez Alborough

Bobo the chimp is always feeling shorter than the rest of the jungle animals. But his friends help him realize he is just the size he was meant to be. Will loves when Bobo's mom catches him.

Wombat Walkabout by Carol Diggory Shields

Six wombat friends go for a walk in single file line, but one by one, as the last wombat in line pauses to look at something, they are kidnapped by a hungry dingo and added to a pack on his back. The final two wombats play a trick to capture the dingo and rescue their friends when they realize the other four have gone missing. A counting backwards book.

Quiet! by Paul Bright

Baby Leo the lion is getting ready to take a nap and Mama Lion fears he will not fall asleep with all the noise in the jungle. So Papa Lion roars to all the animals: "Quiet!" and then threatens to gobble up whomever makes a noise to wake Baby Leo. A few noises are made but Baby Leo doesn't wake so Papa doesn't eat all day. In the end, it is Papa's grumbling tummy that wakes Baby Leo. :)

Crunch Munch Dinosaur Lunch! by Paul Bright

Ty Tyrannosaurus is hungry for lunch and on the hunt but his annoyingly sweet and adoring, baby sister, Teri, keeps getting in his way. Will and I thought she was adorable and loved the way she'd say things like "Wuv oo, Ty rannynormous!" :) All big sibs find their little brothers/sisters to be pests at times, but when it gets right down to it, family is a bond and a protective one at that! Ty proves this at the end of the story. Hands down, Will's carry-around-everywhere-favorite this time.

Fix-It Duck by Jez Alborough

This reminds me of the Little Miss books or Amelia Bedelia. The inside jacket says: "He's got his tools. He's smart - he's strong. What can possibly go wrong?" Will loved finishing my sentence when I read "This is a job for __(Fix It Duck)__!" He also loves to point out what duck overlooked upstairs when he thinks his roof is leaking.

Duck in the Truck by Jez Alborough

While on his way home, duck gets his truck stuck in the muck. His friends all work to help him out in this fun, rhymey story, but I was disappointed when Duck left his friends behind in the muck as soon as they help him get... "unstuck". Will requested both duck books a lot.
