This Week In Tot School...

I can hardly call this a "week's" worth of activities. It was more like a couple days. We've been outside so much this week and before we know it, it's bedtime. So our Tot School week was brief. We focused on numbers, counting and 1:1 correspondence this week. I'm posting a little earlier than usual because of Sophie's party this weekend.

One super simple activity we did was draw numbers (0-9) all over the driveway in sidewalk chalk. Then I'd call out a number and an activity and Will would have to jump, walk backwards, stand on one leg, dance or spin onto that number. He loved pointing out his current age, Sophie's age, Will's age at his next birthday and mommy and daddy's favorite numbers (7 and 9). :)

He's dancing if you couldn't tell. :)
One counting game I found that is great for teaching 1:1 correspondence is this:
I got some circle label stickers in bright colors and made the game as shown. He'd have to count the circles to match them to the number, which I listed both in number and word form just for more exposure to written words. Also, on the backs of the number cards, I put the exact same sticker pattern so that, at the end, he could flip over the numbers to see if the stickers "matched". One extra note, I read that positioning the stickers as shown is the "Montessori recommendation" for work like this because the pattern helps children recognize odd vs even. We're not there yet, but maybe we'll touch on that soon.
Will did get some practice spelling out each written number too. He loves "spelling" things.
We did this game again on another night.
And then I added an extra extension of counting "fuzzy balls" and placing them over the appropriate sticker color.

I made up another (sorta sloppy) page of six squares with dots inside that look like dice. (I wasn't actually looking at a di when I made this and I guess I forgot that the "two" and "three" sides are diagonal. Oops.) Anyway, Will first counted out white floral stones and place one on top of each dot.
Counting.
Then he rolled an actual di and tried to match it to the appropriate square. This was a little difficult for him - those dots on the di are really tiny!
Attempting to count the dots. :)
I must add that Will doesn't really love counting activities like these all that much. But he does love doing "games" with me and requests them all the time, so he did go along with it tonight. One "game" that he did actually really like was the following one. I took an 18-count egg carton and labeled the slots 1-6 across three times as shown. Then he took one white floral stone and placed it randomly inside.
Close the lid and shake, shake, shake! We took turns guessing which number the stone would land on. He told me "I hope it lands on a two, 'cause I'm two." :) So cute.
Then carefully open...
And from there, I wasn't real sure what we would do next. The excitement of opening and seeing which number the stone landed on was good enough for Will. Originally, I had a plan of creating a sort of Bingo board that he'd cover the number of squares as the number under the stone and when it was full, he'd get a prize. But I never got around to making the Bingo board. Oh well, we can save that for the future. I'm sure he'll gladly come back to this egg carton. Instead, we just put a stone on the numbered purple card for each time it landed on that number.
In case you were wondering what the odds were, here's what we did:
Pretty sure "six" got more because he was shaking the box vertically for awhile and the stone inevitably fell to the bottom (a.k.a the six slot) several times. :) LOL

So it's April and supposedly known for rain showers. I made up another counting game that he'd have to pull a number magnet out of the bowl, place it on the umbrella, and then count that many raindrops and put them on the page.
He liked this for a short while.
For example...
Drrr... oops. Umm, you're probably wondering why the raindrops appear to be falling from under the umbrella and not on top of it. Ya, I don't know. It was probably late and/or I was watching TV when I made this and just wasn't thinking. So you'll have to use your imagination that the raindrops are falling around the umbrella. ;)

And finally, I made a counting "muffin tin meal" for Will one day.
5 - baby carrots
4 - pear slices
3 - strawberries
2 - pb "cracker sandwiches" (he prefers this over bread)
1 - yogurt cup
Will had to count the food items and place the appropriate number card behind each. He loved this!
And that was our rather boring Tot School week. We did pull a new "Practical Life Work" slip from the jar and never got around to working on it. So we'll push that one off to next week. And I want to add that Will's two favorite library books of the ones we borrowed last week were "Are You My Mother?" and "The Very Busy Spider". I like those too. We'll be returning those and selecting several new ones tomorrow morning on our way to pick up Sophie's birthday cupcakes.
