Family Weekend & Opposites Day

Will and I got out to the library on Saturday morning during Sophie's first nap (Craig was home). I've come across a couple lists of "100 books to read before kindergarten" and, while I'm not really interested in checking off each and every book, it made me realize that we don't get to the library nearly enough. Okay, ever. I took Will a couple times while on maternity leave, but we just don't get out and do it on weekends now. We read tons at home, but we're missing out on a huge variety and it's a major cost savings to borrow than buy. Duh.
Here are the books we borrowed (I did appreciate the lists I found for a reference of good books to check out!):
Jack and the Beanstalk
Are You My Mother?
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
The Very Busy Spider
Harry, the Dirty Dog
Goldilocks and the Three Bears
This Tree Counts! (We picked this one in honor of Earth Day this week. The library had a nice display set out for Earth Day books.)

Back at home, Sophie's been getting baths in the kitchen sink while the bathroom is under "construction". Good grief! Keeping this girl still is a chore! And getting her to look up to have her hair rinsed is even harder.
On Sunday morning, Craig's parents invited us over for brunch again. It was a much nicer weather day on Sunday and the kids got outside to swing for a bit when we arrived.

Brunch was yummy and we got to see baby Celia again! She's 2.5 weeks old now and doing so well. She was very bright eyed and cuddly on Sunday. Will checked her out and gave her a kiss on the forehead.

Celia cooing with her mommy.
Papa was very impressed with Sophie's balance and strength. She has some pretty good control of those stabilizer muscles. We're all pretty certain that (while she isn't super interested at the moment) she's just going to get up and take off walking one day. Papa said she's going to be a good skier when she's bigger.

Will's ready to go! Wearing daddy's coat and papa's hat.
All day Sunday, we had been talking to Will about "opposites". I didn't take many pictures, 'cause it was mostly just conversation. But he seemed to grasp the concept and enjoyed all our comparisons. So today he learned:
1) loud vs quiet: saying his name loud and whispering it, listening to music loud and soft
2) up vs down: stairs, standing up and sitting down
3) tall vs short: daddy is tall, Sophie is short, giraffes are tall, meerkats are short; we also compared trees outside
4) long vs short: mommy's hair is long, Will's hair is short
5) fast vs slow: cheetah's are fast, turtles are slow, running vs walking, mommy and daddy raced and Will learned that mommy is fast, daddy is slow :)
6) big vs small: we talked about dogs - Noah and Sam are big, Brutus and Milo are small; we compared cars/trucks that drove by
7) over vs under AND above vs below: we made a bridge for his matchbox cars to drive over and under and talked about them being above and below as well; also discussed this at the playground; one extension I'd like to do this week is a limbo! - he can step over or crawl under
8) heavy vs light: Will tried to pick up one of the paint cans from our bathroom job and he thought it was funny that it was so heavy!... but picking up an empty can is light
9) thick vs thin: we didn't discuss this one yet but I'm thinking of comparing books?
10) hard vs soft: daddy's knit hat is soft, the window is hard, Will's jacket is soft, his water bottle is hard
11) full vs empty: glasses of water - one is full, one is empty; if we pour out the full one, now it's empty!
12) inside vs outside: Brutus goes outside to go potty, then Will lets him back inside
Oh, I had such high hopes of a visit to the zoo on Sunday. The weather was lovely, we didn't have other plans, etc. etc. But alas, the kids didn't fall asleep till later than usual for nap and we looked up the hours to find that the zoo entrance closes at 4:00 until Memorial Day! Boo.
So Plan B: a visit to Maumee Bay. It really is beautiful there and it's such a nice (free) luxury that we live so close. But often it's so windy and that can be unpleasant. Not this time! The weather was perfect! We even ditched the jackets after awhile. First we hit up the playground.
The playground is a great place to continue our talk of opposites. He also learned "through" (the tunnel) and "across" (the monkey bars).
The ramp here is always the favorite part for the first half of the visit. He runs UP...
...and DOWN... again, and again, and again...
BELOW the tunnel...
ACROSS...
DOWN...
Craig wanted to see ME cross the monkey bars and hang glider. :)

Then Will got up the courage to try the hang glider.
And I let Sophie try the monkey bars! Okay, I promise I'm not torturing my child. She LOVED it! And she is so freakin' strong!!! She was pulling herself up (as she does on everything at home - the dishwasher, the side tables, the chairs, etc.) and she would not let go! Of course I didn't let her hang by herself, but I could tell by how little weight I was supporting that she could have hung there if I let her!
Look how excited she is!

More tunnel time.

After the playground, we made our way over to the sledding hill that I remember so fondly from Cross Country practice. Will and Craig walked up and I took their picture and then I hiked up with Sophie. (I'm pretty sure Craig had to carry Will a little bit, but not much.) I really love how much more active Will's becoming. He loves to be outside, running and playing, which is quite a change from his first couple years.

At the top!

Running down hill! This is so much fun!

Love this one - if only it was brighter. So cute.

Finally, we capped off the visit with a walk on the beach and out the little pier.

Back at home, Will continues driving his cars OVER and UNDER a "bridge".
And in closing, a few old pics that never made it into a post.
Craig is SO PROUD: Sophie pulled herself up like this. Craig thinks I was irresponsible to take a picture like this when she could fall, but I just knew she wouldn't. I love this chic - she's so cool!
And a cute pic of Soph and Wes back when we were coloring eggs.
Same day - loving the whispy curls by her ears.
As I mentioned, Will wants to be outside constantly now and I try to make that happen as best I can. He is awesome at peddling his tricycle now. Not sure exactly when that skill began (because he couldn't do it last summer) but he rides up and down, around and around. His rule is not to go past the trees in the front yard, which are still a short distance from the road.
