The kids had a doctor's appoinitment yesterday evening at 5 pm. I scheduled Sophie's 18 month well check (a little late) and requested an evening, so we saw a different doctor than we normally do, but liked him very much. We also combined this appointment with the opportunity to get the flu shots for both kids. We elected to do them this year because of the changes in the kids' lifestyles compared to last year. Will is in preschool now and exposed to a whole new set of potentially sick kids. And Sophie is no longer exclusively breastfed and is indirectly exposed to the germs brought home from Will's classmates and my patients. So it seems to make sense this year to go ahead with the flu shot, while last year was a much lower risk. Both kids got the shot - I requested not to get the mist for Will.
Craig met me in the parking lot with the kids so that I could come straight from work and kept Will in the waiting room while I took Sophie back for her exam.
Baby girl's stats are as follows:
weight = 26#4oz (75th percentile)
length = 33" (75-90th percentile)
weight/length = 75th percentile
head circumference = 19.5" (>95th percentile... shocker)
Everything looked great with her physical exam and we completed the "standard" autism screening checklist that applies to all 18 month olds. Sophie shows no risks. They asked a range of developmental questions and discussed her diet and sleep habits as usual. We are very proud of our healthy 18 month old! And it appears Sophie will inherit the height from the women on Craig's side of the family. Nice! She has consistently been on or near the 75th and 90th percentiles for height. Both Craig's mom and sister are about 5'8".
Following the exam, we brought Will in for his flu shot while Sophie and I stepped into the hallway. He did have a brief (delayed) cry but recovered quickly thanks to a fun-size pack of M&M's in daddy's pocket. Yes, in this circumstance, I decided to use food as a reward. ;)
Sophie received the DTaP and flu shot at this appointment. They happened to be out of the Hep A that she was due to receive, but she will get it in a month when she returns for her 2nd (follow-up) flu shot. She cried as the nurse gave her the shots, but recovered almost instantly when I picked her up. Such brave kiddos! Oh, and neither child has had any reactions to the shots. Apparently, fever is a fairly common reaction (about 15% of kids). But we didn't even give Sophie Tylenol prior to the shots this time. So we're grateful for that too!
I packed a light snack and water bottles for the kids since I knew we'd be nearing dinner time by the end of our appointment and I'd spent Monday evening prepping dinner so that I just had to pop it in the oven and boil some noodles when we got home. Bedtime was a little later than usual for Sophie, but all in all, I think the evening went very smoothly.
Thank you God for healthy children!!!
