We actually stole the idea from the zoo. They do a noon celebration with crafts and ball drop and such for the kids from 11-1 today. I even contemplated going, but it's pretty sloppy outside with melting snow and the I knew Will would start to fall asleep on the way home and ruin his nap. (Grr! I DO look forward to the day when naps don't determine the schedule for our life... but for now, they're important.)
First we made our own noisemaker using an idea I got in a magazine.
What you need: a paper cup, a 2-3' piece of yarn or thick string, a paper clip, water. Poke a hole in the bottom middle of the cup and pull one end of the yarn through from the inside. Tie this end to a paper clip to keep it in place. To "play", dampen the string with water, then lightly pinch the yarn and drag your fingers down the yarn's length.
This musical noisemaker is based on a Brazilian instrument called a cuica (kwee-kah). The cup acts as an amplifier for the sound made by the string's vibration -- and be prepared, it's surprisingly loud!
My little lefty, gripping the string.

Giving it a tug.

"How does that work?"

We attempted a picture with all the kids... and they weren't having it.

Now Craig and I are having a quiet evening in: kids in bed, jammies, maybe a movie and some snuggling. Missing our annual party with the gang but hey... we'll be back... just taking a temporary leave of absence right now.
Wishing you all a very happy, healthy New Year!!!
