A trip to the dentist

This past Monday was another milestone for Will: his first visit to the dentist. It is now recommended that children see a dentist for the first time at age one. The old recommendation was age three, so many "old school" dentists (like Craig's and mine) will not see children until then. So I scoped out our insurance coverage and found a pediatric dentist near us. A friend of my mom's works in this office and I'd heard many good reviews about the dentist.

Our first visit went well and is mostly educational for the parents. Will got to lay in the chair while the dentist briefly examined his mouth and commented on how good he was! We also received a kiddie toothbrush and were taught a nice, easy technique for brushing a toddler's teeth. (I had been wiping his gums with a washcloth since he was just a couple months old and using a toothbrush twice a day for the last several months.) Per the mouth exam, the dentist determined that Will has a pretty strong overbite and will also need to have his frenulum clipped later in life to help his front teeth come together.

The dentist was pleased to hear Will was off the bottle before his birthday and never took the pacifier. Since I am a dietitian, he also knows Will is eating nutritiously and not getting sweets and sugary beverages at home. We were given many educational handouts including one on how our generation has the highest ever rates of diabetes (yikes!) and obesity.

We go back in 6 months for another check-up and he should have many more teeth by then!

Also, while I'm discussing teeth, I found the cutest little, handmade, wooden box while we were shopping in Suttons Bay last weekend. It says "tooth fairy" on it and the top slides off to put a child's "lost" teeth in and stick under their pillow. I had a wooden, tooth box when I was little so I bought one for Will... even though we shouldn't need it for another 6 or so years.
