Snow!

Photobucket

Okay... so it was just a dusting... but it was our first of the season and we didn't hesitate to go out and play in it!

Will's cool mittens from Grandma & Grandpa Riedeman match the coat from Griffin! Dad rigs up a "mitten-keeper-onner" (LOL).

Didn't know you could mow the snow, did you?

He's saying "snowball". And that tiny thing in his hands is his snowball -LOL.

It's getting chilly! Time to come inside:

Soph observes as I make her lunch: we're doing the rice, lentils, carrots and applesauce again today.

Saturday was a perfectly relaxing day. We just hung in and hung out.

In the evening, Craig went out with friends for their annual "Guys Shopping Trip". And Casey & Wes brought the girls over for an evening pajama playdate. Will is getting to be such a good big cousin/brother. He brought each of the girls a toy to play with from the toy bin and then got down and crawled around on the floor with them and sang songs.

Holiday Stuff

Our "Cookies for Santa" plate is finished! Thanks Jan! We love it!

And here are the kids' ornaments:

With 19 days to go, Will and I made a paper chain for the Christmas countdown. Will got more practice with scissors and has enjoyed snipping off a link every night before bed.

Last year, in lieu of ornaments, we placed all our Christmas greeting cards on the tree. This year we created a super cute card stand using an upside down tomato cage, some green wrapping paper and miniature binder clips. It's ridiculous how excited I get when a fun project turns out as cute as I'd hoped. ;)

Tonight we made another "project": a message for Santa to sit out with our plate of cookies.

I love using the kids hand and footprints to make little crafty time capsules.

And early next week, we're going to take another festive treat to the sitters to share with the other kids. Nutter Butter Reindeer Cookies!

What's For Dinner? Week 3

Probably gonna' be taking a lot more help from the freezer the next few weeks with all the parties and other functions going on. However, more parties also means less meals to plan too.
On the menu this week:
-homemade mac 'n cheese, steamed broccoli
-grandma's chili (from the freezer)
-roasted vegetable penne (from the freezer)

Thankfully, the mac 'n cheese recipe is huge so I froze half for later and therefore contributed to the freezer instead of just taking away. ;)

We have parties every weekend for the next 4 weeks, not including Christmas Eve and Day! I'm still not sure what I'm bringing to each but I need to decide fast. Not sure what kind of grocery shopping I'll be able to do next week, so this Thursday is going to be a big one.

Still trying different ways to get meat/protein foods into Will's diet. He's refusing most every main dish lately, but he's got veggies and fruit coming out of his ears. We tried "ants on a log" last night and he liked the crunch-factor so he managed to ingest a little peanut butter. Oh well. Will's still a very good eater and I guess if I have to deal with pickiness in one food group, meat's not so bad. We can work around that... it just takes creativity!

New for Sophie this week: lentils and cottage cheese (separately - LOL). I bought a bag of dry lentils (super cheap!) and ground them to a coarse powder like her cereal grains. Then I just cook a mixture of lentils and rice on the stove top to form a perfect porridge to be mixed with various vegetables and fruits, i.e. carrots, apples and squash. Cottage cheese - an excellent source of protein and good source of dairy - can be paired with any fruit, veggie or grain.

Quick nutrition lesson: Rice and beans - one of the oldest dishes in human history - originated with the discovery that diets based on single plant foods do not foster optimal growth because certain amino acids are lacking. When certain vegetable proteins are combined, they can make up for those deficiencies together. For this reason, they are nicknamed "complimentary proteins". Other examples: grains/legumes such as pea soup and toast or ANY combo of rice and beans; grains/dairy such as pasta and cheese, rice pudding, cheese sandwich, etc. Often times, people think of rice and beans as a fattening dish. But that just depends on how you prepare it. Creating a porridge as I mentioned above (even if the grains and legumes are left whole) is a very healthy dish for people of all ages. Chinese cultures make a dish called congee ("con-jee") that you can make right in the crock pot with 6-8 cups of liquid (water or broth) to just 2 cups of any grain (brown rice, jasmine rice, barley, etc.) or bean. Sounds like a lot of liquid, but they let it cook overnight and then serve it for every meal of the day adding various things to change up the dish. For example, you could do a jasmine rice and add cinnamon, nuts and dried fruit for a breakfast porridge. Then at lunch and dinner add some savory vegetables and herbs. Of course you can also scale back to much smaller portions prepared just on the stove top... as in Sophie's dinner tonight!

Some other routine meals for Sophie:
-avocado mashed with banana or yogurt and a grain on the side
-oatmeal, yogurt and applesauce (soon to be topped with cinnamon for an "apple pie" flavor)
-chicken with mixed veggies and a grain on the side
-a grain/veggie combo with pears on the side

So this coming weekend we have a birthday dinner with friends and one (of many) family Christmas parties on Sunday. Should be some good food and socializing!

Holiday Pajama Brunch

Sunday was our 6th annual Pajama Brunch! I started this get-together the year we got married because I love to entertain and I wanted a fun, casual way to celebrate with our friends. It's the second Sunday morning in December so it usually doesn't interfere with other functions. Everyone comes over in pj's and we eat a big brunch and hang out. This is the first year we decided to omit the gift exchange, but our friends very generously still brought gifts for the kids.

Our table ready for eight guests and a yummy spread:

We had a sausage and egg breakfast casserole, orange french toast, homemade sweet rolls, fruit salad, and juice. Our meal was much more potluck this year!
Photobucket

Last year we took a neat group picture, but this year we were missing one of the guys due to work travels, so we just did our usual pic of the ladies. Sophia is one of the girls now. :)

Will & Sophie got their very own Santa!

Sophie gets kisses from her Godmother Kelly. I don't think I mentioned this yet, but Kelly is having a baby GIRL! Cecilia Mae should be arriving at the end of March. So we are excited to add another little lady to the party next year!

We managed to get Will down early for a nap and then in the afternoon, Craig took Will to a kids' Christmas party through Grandma Riedeman's work at GBU. Sophie hadn't napped well (likely due to teething) and seemed to have a persistent runny nose so I didn't want her around the other kids. She and I stayed home in our jammies, cleaned up from brunch, did laundry and made dinner.

Check out Will's shirt for the party. It was a hand me down from our friend.

All the kids at the party brought a food/hygene item to give to the needy.

Will colored a picture, sat with Santa and got a pretty substantial gift to open considering the number of kids in attendance! Craig & Will also brought home a nice gift for Sophie since she couldn't attend. Here's my 2 guys with Santa and Grandma and Papa Riedeman.

So another exhausting weekend has gone by. December is insane, isn't it? It's almost 2010!
